A downloadable tool

Narrative OS is an offline-first writing environment for long-form fiction, built as a single HTML file that runs entirely in your browser. No account, no server, no internet required after download.

Download the file. Open it in any modern browser. Start writing.

What it does:

  • Markdown editor with live preview, focus mode, and typewriter scrolling
  • Folder-based project organization with drag-and-drop, document status tracking, and bulk operations
  • Project-wide search with natural language queries, search synonyms (search "Stiles" and also find "Stilinski"), and faceted filtering by tag and status
  • Categorical tagging system inspired by Archive of Our Own, with color-coded prefixes for characters, relationships, settings, arcs, content warnings, tone, and POV
  • Per-document metadata: POV, tense, timeline, rating, word count targets, and summaries
  • Folder compilation into Markdown, HTML, plain text, AO3-ready HTML, or DOCX
  • Side-by-side reference pane for viewing one document while editing another
  • Version snapshots, auto-save, and full workspace backup/restore
  • Writing sprints with countdown timer
  • Dark and light themes with full color customization
  • Fully responsive on mobile and tablet, installable as a PWA

What it doesn't do:

  • No cloud sync. Your data lives in your browser's local storage.
  • No collaboration features. This is a solo writing tool.
  • No AI integration. It's just a workspace.

Important: Your work is stored in your browser. Clearing browser data deletes everything. Use the Save Workspace and Export MD buttons regularly to export backups. The user manual (included as a separate download) covers this and everything else in detail.

Built with transparency: Narrative OS was designed and directed by Oddy, with implementation built using Claude Code (Anthropic). Full details on the human-in-the-loop development process are in the manual.
